This is going to be a shorter post on printer repair of for HP, Lexmark, Kyocera and other laser printers.  Many times during the year clients call with a common problem when when they use more than on size of paper. Its the HP repair size mis-match problem. This error occurs when the laser printer receives a command from the computer to print on a size of paper not in the paper cassettes or the MP tray (tray 1).  First, this is not a printer repair problem.  It’s a user error.

If your HP, Lexmark or Kyocera laser printer drawer is setup as legal size and you send a 8.5″ x 11″  (standard size paper) print job to it you will receive this error “size mis-match” or a message that says to load standard paper. The printer is acting correctly.  If thinks is should be getting a legal job sent to the paper drawer but instead you are sending a standard size paper job.  The repair of the printer is simple:  change the paper in the drawer to standard size. Now if you wanted to print legal and you think you are sending a legal size job and you get this message the Lexmark HP printer repair is still not needed.

Always check the properties for paper size when you get this message. You will get the HP printer repair error size mis-match if your properties of the file you are sending is incorrect. Each document you send to the Lexmark, Kyocera, HP or other laser printer maintains information from the last time it was printed.  If the last time you used legal paper when printing then unless you change the properties of the file with your computer it will think you are using legal size paper again. The MP tray is a little different. The MP tray can not tell the difference between legal or standard size paper.  If you say legal and it has standard 90% of the time you will get a paper jam! Why? The HP MFD 2840 was introduced in 2005 as a HP printer scanner copier new generation machine. It was designed for entry level color business applications that copied or printed on the average 1,500 to 2,00 page per month.  the previous models of HP MFD non-color models such as the 3390 and 3350 were very reliable for home offices and low volume. However from the start the HP 2840 has various repair service problems.

The two laser printer MFD repair problems most associated are the ADF (automatic document feeder) scanner failure and the toner cartridge carousel alignment problem. Neither problems are not normal user repairable printer problems.

The scanner error code 5 requires the replacement of the ADF image scan unit.  This requires taking apart the ADF unit to install the scanner under the unit. It takes a printer repair technicians approximately 45 minutes to complete this laser printer repair on the HP 2840. The part costs between $167 to $247 depending upon HP current supply and market demand.  This part has been on national allocation several times over the past 2 years due to the demand for the printer scanner repair. In recent months the demand has dropped because of the age of the machine and lower laser printer scanner machine replacement costs.

The second most common problem with the copier printer scanner MFD HP 2840 which requires a trained technician is the toner cartridge carousel alignment repair.  In most a cases this problem just requires labor unless the carousel does not stay aligned but in some cases the carousel unit will need to be replaced.  This problem could be caused by normal usage, bumping the printer copier, and putting the toner cartridge in wrong causing a jam which results in a printer repair.  It takes a technician 1.5 to 2.5 hours to solve this problem. However, there are no guarantees that the problem stays solved. It is not unusual for the carousel to become mis-aligned a few days to a few months after the HP laser printer repair.

since the HP 2840 color printer scanner was introduce HP has struggled with several other color MFD devices. Over the years HP printers, Lexmark, Canon and other prints have greatly changed their fuser assemblies. I would not call it an laser printer improvement. When you get an 50 printer service error on HP printers,  921 error on Lexmark, SC54xx on Ricoh printers and fixing unit faliure on Canon printers is means the fuser assembly has failed.

The fuser assembly is the part that uses pressure and heat to melt the toner to the actual paper. It consist of gears, bushings,  heat rollers, pressure roller, paper pick fingers and other components, If you have an HP laser printer, Lexmark printer then for the most part you change the entire fuser assembly. If you business class Ricoh, Sharp, Canon, Gestetner, Savin and other copier printer scanners then the fuser assembly is rebuilt then majority of the time.

HP laser printers started to change their fusers to use films instead of Teflon coated rollers in their fuser assemblies.  This decreased the cost to make the machine but increase the failure rate of the laser printers.  Some other companies have followed suit. The HP laser printer fuser repair is a whole unit swap out an if obtain from a quality company should come with a 3 to 6 month warranty or 12,000 to 24,000 page warranty.  If it does not then switch your vendor!

Fuser repairs for copier printer scanners is more time consuming and costly than in straight printers. However, the advantage is then most of the companies still use the hard Teflon coated fuser that has a much great life and printer copier service failures.

Do not look for the cheapest price when replacing the fuser assembly during a HP printer repair or copier repair. Look for the best warranty and mid range price.
